Session 15

  • end of second night solzak second watch disappears from post
  • guard wakes orsk
  • orsk wakes naraaku and eben
  • go to investigate
  • find valley solzak talking to thin air
  • all approach orsk makes sound solzak runs back towards camp avoiding group
  • orsk confronts solz who does not remember anything
  • naraaku head sback to camp notices guard missing hears trickle of water coming from inix caravan, goes to investigate sees silk wyrm tucking into fresh water supplies, a guard lies by its feet unconcious and covered in silk strands
  • fight ensues naraaku at back peppering with arrows as eben and orsk hand to hand and solzak crossbow from opposite side
  • wyrm puts up good fight and tries to fly away but is struck by solzak again before orsk leaps over the side of the cart and piledrives its skull with his hammer
  • meanwhile the water had been leaking from the holes created by the wyrm, one of the guards manages to make a rudimentary plug for the water barrel and orsk flips it
  • The rest of the night passes peacefully
  • Travel day 3 starts as caravan moves from the relative confinement of the stony barrens to the vast plains of the alluvial sands, the city slickers are slightly daunted by the nothingness that presents itself before them
  • a few hours down the road naraaku spots a broken down caravan a little way off the road, initially cautiously moving past, when movement is spotted from within head to investigate
naraaku and solzak head up front and spot the heads of several silt runners ducking and running between the broken carcass of the caravan
  • Naraaku manages to get up to the side wall before Solzak is spotted
  • The runners open fire with their blowpipes and dash back inside as Orsk and Eben close in
  • A Silt runner shamen uses a spell to pull the rocks up from the battered wall to try to hinder the progress of the attackers but it is not good enough as Orsk piles in
  • Orsk notices that the sand inside the caravan is black as night causing the little light inside the remains to be further absorbed
  • Runners with Spears dart out of the darkness trying to kick up the dust and blind Orsk but he is lucky and the air disperses quickly but he suffers savage wounds as the darters and spears find chinks in his armour
  • From the caravans side more darters appear this time heading for solzak and naraaku, the smell of elf flesh too much to resist
  • naraaku and solzak fall back attempting to knock down the runners, one goes down but then by some miracle an ankheg, attracted by the frantic vibrations of the combat, bursts through the sand, sprays acid on the runners killing one and then grabs the remaining runner in its jaws and takes it below ground, squealing
  • Inside Orsk is facing a barrage of darts and spear attacks, he swings madly around slamming 2 of the runners into the walls but his wounds are beginning to take their toll until Eben leaps in, carving one of the spearmen in two and maiming the other, shouting a challenge that sends a ripple of fear through the runners
  • The shamen kicks the dust up to obscure his retreat as the tide of battle turns against the runners, the darters peel off and try to come out the rear of the caravan to make a run for it, they get half way and the darter is struck down by naraaku and solzak
  • Eben, seeing the cowardly runner shamen flee runs, axe in both hands leaping through the firing slot of the caravan (getting caught in the process) and charges the shamen. With one great swing of his Axe he connects cleanly on the open neck, blood sprays over the golden sands as the shamens head and shocked ecpression roll down the dune to a peaceful stop
  • Investigating the ruin you find a crate of loot collected by the runners
  • additionally the caravan is thought to have been diplomatic and that some very important mission was being undertaken when the caravan was attacked by Elves, Eben recognises signs of a Night Runner raid (his experiences with house m’ke informing him)
  • the black sand was evidence of great defiling that took place here about a week ago and a couple weeks after the attack. Also there are no bodies to be found save the rotting carapace of the two mekillots who pulled the caravan
  • The only other clues are some scraps of parchment that indicate that this was a very top secret mission known only to the highest templars or even just Kalak himself
  • Later that day as Naraaku ranges ahead he spots two figures in the distance, one hunched over a staff and the other supporting, they are waving and trying to get the attention of the caravan
  • When they get within a couple hundred metres naraaku spots that they are gith and immediately opens fire, bringing the one hunched over a staff to its knees, the other waves more frantically
  • Orsk rides out to naraaku to try to get him to stop firing as the elf lets off another volley, this time in the second gith but he remains standing
  • Angrily Orsk rides forward shouting at naraaku to stop firing until he finds out what they are after
  • Cautiously approaching the gith Orsk, using a combination of signs and gestures manages to communicate in a basic way, the gith is dehydrated and motions to its mouth before being willing to cooperate. Orsk allows it a swig from his skin to which it begins to gulp down vast quantities before Orsk has to snatch it away
  • they are carrying a map that seems to show the location of a tower (tower of voloteph) and indicates several areas of the surrounds of tyr including dens of different races/clans. An interesting feature of the map is an ‘x’ and the words ‘meet here’ . Orsk then asks the gith what is in the tower to which the gith motions to each of their pouches. Orsk binds his hands and takes the giths purse, which is empty save for a few copper ceramics, it then continues to motion to all pouches
  • Eben approaches and indicates that the creature might be referring to treasure, to which it nods.
  • Although it doesn’t speak common it seems to understand some rudimentary basics and after a few more minutes of gesturing it requests to draw in the sand wheras Orsk carefully lets it draw using the blunt end of its spear
  • slowly it draws the shape of a skull and then proceeds to draw a long snake twisting through it…. Yarnath!
  • Much to the protest of the rest of the group Orsk takes the gith with them, bound and bundled onto solzaks crodlu planning to find a seer or linguist in altaruk that can question the gith in its native tongue
  • kaldras and the other elves are unhappy about the prisoner but when the decision is made to break one of its legs so it cannot escape everyone feels more at ease
  • by end of day wind is beginning to pick up and kaldras warns that a storm is coming
  • sure enough next day caravan is surrounded by a dust storm, the experienced caravan master though manages to maintain control and direction of the inix and the group manage to stick together and get through without too great an ordeal, by late in the day the silhouette of altaruk on the crest of its mountainous home begins to take shape, but the practicality of ascending the winding and narrow canyon up to it becomes glaringly obvious.
  • Footsteps echo as they begin the trek upwards and every so often crackles and small rocks drift slowly down the wall as the wind shifts them from up high, either that or you are not alone…
