Session 24

  • the zombies were at the barriers, solzak had just been lifted to safety by Gambala
  • Orsk called forth to his ancestor spirits to give him strength for this battle. His prayer was answered as a great light came forth from the darkening sky. he struck the hulking zombie once more and the impact seemed to sear the zombies flesh searing it black.
  • The necromancer cackled, moving his warping vortex close to kagero
  • The zombies clawed and tried to grab the heroes as they desperately fought them off. Some threw corrupt necrotic filth at Eben, his skin bubbling and burning as the foul earth ate away his flesh. He and Orsk were taking alot of punishment, the zombies kept coming but the defence was stalwart
  • On the west front however things were not going so well, the zombies broke through the line, clambering over the wall to devour what little there was left of the village defenders, the rest were retreating to the second defence line forcing Naraaku and Ali to withdraw to the second line of defence
  • naraaku and Ali directed the villagers, calling them desperately back as yet more filth was thrown over the barriers, catching some of the fleeing shadowfolk
  • Kagero pulled back just in time as the necrotic vortex warped into the narrow alley where she fought. It did not stop the zombies however as they came through, confronting eben so that he was near surrounded
  • Solzak had pulled back, badly wounded and weakened from the relentless defiling of the necromancer. Determined for revenge he took up position to lie in wait for the opportune moment to do what he does best, strike from the shadow
  • Gambala helped villagers as they ran back, gently helping them over barriers and ensuring enough protection was in place and then too took up a hiding place
  • Orsk swung at the mighty hulking zombie once more, it fell to its knees, the wound from his spirit touched hammer steaming and bubbling. A puzzled look appeared on its face and for a moment that seemed to last forever for orsk it froze, before finally falling flat on its face in the sand
  • Eben flew into a barbaric rage, slicing zombies left and right, calling out to the primal spirits for strength. Barking orders to the others and commanding the front line. His wounds were beginning to take their toll however so swinging his axe around to break away from the attackers he pulled back to assist in the defence leaving orsk to hold the line supported by naraaku, expertly firing into the melee
  • The villagers cried out as the giant fell and inspiration aided them as they fired upon the necromancer, who had appeared at the east front of the field
  • Solzak fired too, striking the necromancer before melting back into the shadow
  • The necromancer cursed and spat black blood onto the ground, calling forth dark incantations to move the vortex once more until it was almost upon Orsk, the defiling power rattling even the experienced captain’s nerve as he desperately fought to keep the zombies from pulling him from rex
  • Naraaku leapt up onto the barrier, running nimbly along the length to draw a line to the necromancer, firing off a dual shot volley. One shot seemed to connect but the other arrow warped and fell at his feet as the Elf cursed the dark mage’s protections
  • The villagers had now retreated to the second barrier and let forth an almighty volley of fire at the necromancer. Inspired by encouraging words from Ali they took careful aim, and hit! Bolt after bolt impacted into the necromancers chest, black gore pouring from his many wounds
  • With the life-force rapidly depleting from his body the necromancer gargled in his dark language, bringing forth the vortex once more, consuming orsk and rex in necrotic power. Orsk let out an angered and painful howl, bringing a sneering grin to the face of the necromancer. The mighty half-giant was overrun and within moments the rest of the group saw to their horror that he was pulled under rex by the zombie horde
  • Ali cried out to warn the others, save Orsk! She and Eben drove forward once more, Eben having had time to catch his breath and throwing his full weight against the foul undead
  • Solzak, seeing the mage distracted once more sprang from the shadows, took one moment to aim, then sent a bolt directly at the necromancer, for a moment time seemed to slow down as the bolt inched towards its prey and then all at once it struck and struck true! The necromancers head rolled back, the arrow protruding from what was once his windpipe, he fell backwards and evaporated into thin air like dust in a sandstorm
  • A cheer went up once more from the villagers, could the tide be turning once more?
  • Another volley of arrows and bolts from Naraaku and the villagers rained down upon the advancing horde, unaware of their masters demise these dead were on a relentless path of destruction
  • Acting quickly Eben threw himself into the melee, tossing zombies to the left and right like rag dolls pulling Orsk from under rex and throwing him ontop, spurring rex on together they quickly pulled back to the second defence barricade allowing naraaku and the villagers a clear line of sight to the remaining zombies
  • One of the groups of filth throwing zombies had been unable to break through the first barrier until suddenly with a crash they finally made it through. Solzak was left in the open after having not made it back to the second defensive barrier. With a single volley the already heavily wounded Solzak was hit critically on the chest, fizzling necrotic filth burning through armour and cloth. He fell to the ground groaning from the sheer intense pain and then fell silent.
  • Naraaku, seeing the imminent peril of Solzaks position rushed out into the open just as the zombies were advancing on Solzak. The villagers fired off a volley to cover the darting run and in moments Naraaku was by his side. Lucky too that he got there so fast, removing the worst of the necrotic filth just as Solzak slipped into unconsciousness. Dragging him back to the relative cover of a nearby building he was able to further tend his wounds, using an old elven hunting trick to quickly staunch the flow of blood and washing the filth away with broy. The sting of the alcohol was enough to bring Solzak around to a dull moan which was enough for now
  • The battle was long and hard but now an end was in sight as the last remaining zombies drew ever nearer. As the last corpse finally dropped and did not continue to move the villagers let out a cheer and the standing members of the group let out a sigh of relief
  • Their rest was short lived however as their thoughts turned to the orb, was this all just a distraction?
  • quickly but quietly they hurried back towards the school, naraaku and solzak keeping the group as hidden as possible
  • As they moved between buildings shadows seemed to move with them and then all at once they spotted 6 cloaked figures in full battle gear, inhumanly tall and seemingly floating instead of walking, Wights! They were searching for something and we all assumed they were the servants of Laylon-ka. Praising our foresight at disguising the orb we still did not have time to lose, but for now the group were too badly wounded to fight so they waited for the ghastly undead to leave
  • The minutes dragged on and it seemed that the creatures would never leave, searching house after house, until finally their leader seemed to call them back and almost as quickly as they’d appeared they were gone
  • quickly the group rushed back to the school, Orsk was keen that naraaku scout out to check there were no more undead but was greeted with a snarl from the elf so they posted guards instead
  • Solzak rushed to narissa’s side who fussed over his wounds before Orsk steamed in and demanded to know where the orb was, it is safe replied narissa and as he was persistent she pointed out that it was in the same place it was left. Tybia was awake additionally and had spoken, although in an almost trance-like state of her ordeal
  • It seems in using the orb the spirit of Kalid-ma had taken hold and forced her hand to do the terrible things she had done. More was that she had also inherited some of his memories, namely the last few days of his life
  • he (kalid-ma) had been in the last throes of performing the ritual to transform himself into a dragon using the 5 obsidian orbs when something went horrifically wrong, a torrent of blood and energy entered his chamber, overloading him with fresh energy but too much that could not be contained. Shadows crept in and consumed him and then the next thing he new he was soaring high above kalidnay, beating mighty wings. He felt invincible and set upon a destructive rampage that laid waste to the entire area surrounding kalidnay. However his triumph was short lived as the combined forces of Kalak, Hamanu of Urik and the Dragon of Athas met him on the field of battle and destroyed him, or so they thought, as they only destroyed a shadow form of him, his spirit was transferred to the obsidian orbs that had fueled his transformation and his physical body was left in the shadowfell. The last memories are of being held by an old man dressed in purple robes and wearing a gold crown, Kalak, and resting in a room of obsidian.
  • The decision is made not to wait in the village lest reinforcements arrive and venture out into the wilderness to hide in the nearby dunes so to be much harder to detect by the undead
  • Still badly wounded but resolute the group load up the remaining working silt skimmer and head out to the east and an area of sandy hills called ‘bleak point’.
  • Naraaku scouts ahead of the skimmer and successfully finds a place which would be defensible and offers a good level of protection from the elements
  • The group set up camp and naraaku is set on watch, being the only fully fit member of the party
  • The rest of the night passed slowly until naraaku is alerted by a small blip in the distance, and it was coming directly toward him!
  • he moved quickly and quietly away from camp and lay still, waiting to see who this mysterious visitor might be.
  • the blip moved ever closer and naraaku could see that it was running, and more that it was in fact an elf!
  • Stringing an arrow to his bow in caution he began calling to the others (in his unique elven way) for them to wake up. Eben, Ali, solzak and kagero awoke and quickly readied weapons whilst orsk slept soundly on
  • It was still unclear why this elf could be running towards the group, but then it dawned on Ali, she remembered something else she had once read about the elves, that there were those who had died trying to carry important messages and because their task lay unfinished they were doomed to repeat it for all eternity, they are the dune runners
  • Closer it came and naraaku let off a couple of warning shots, the elf was not stalled by these and maintained its pace. The group could see clearly now the greying withered skin on his bones, he was barely recognisable save for the rags of his clothes and his build
  • He picked up speed and before anyone else could react he was upon the group, moving past them at speed but almost pausing at each member, as if expecting them to join him
  • Ali lost control and began to run alongside before the entire group called out and she managed to shake it off
  • more arrows were fired at the creature, and then just as it was upon him orsk awoke and swung round his hammer, knocking the elf to the ground. naraaku approached it, making sure it was dead, and saying a silent blessing, the elf was at peace
  • The group returned to sleep and naraaku set back to his watch wondering what message it was that the elf had failed to deliver
