Session 26

  • The session begins as the group are fighting the remainder of the thieves and lieutenants who, despite their leader falling decide to carry on fighting.
  • the lieutenants surround orsk, whirling their chains and flinging them at him trying to drag him off, one breaks during the struggle, much to Orsk’s joy
  • Porgo and his group break off from the party, and after spotting a weakly guarded alleyway, cut down the blocking thugs and make a quick getaway. Naraaku, who spots their escape sends an arrow after them, but they are already gone as the others curse their cowardice
  • The lieutenants prove to be difficult foes, disappearing from sight and reappearing at a different location, confusing and distracting the party
  • Just when it seems they have the upper hand a rumble of rubble and scuttling of many legs draws the groups attention to the arrival of 5 cilopses, gigantic millipedes covered in scales and sporting a single eye. Their feelers honing in on the psychic energy of the group they move quickly and with great agility
  • naraaku is struck first, the psionic paralysis rendering him dazed and rooted to the spot, lucky for him however he is surrounded by allies who are able to jump in to his aid
  • Orsk is struck also, but much more grievously. Kagero rushes to his side to defend him and encourage him back to his feet
  • The lieutenants do not escape entirely either and the cilopses close in as they retreat. Three of the creatures close in on the defenders in the centre of the square an they fight desperately to keep them at bay as they squeeze and wind around the cracks in the buildings, all the while their feelers twitch and clatter together excitedly.
  • Gambala, with his surging psychic energy is chased down by a cilops but as he draws from the energy around him he creates a dimensional rift, blasting the cilops out of his way
  • Enraged and short tempered, Eben flies at the creatures, hacking left and right, forcing them back and drawing their attention away from the wounded naraaku
  • With skill and determination the group triumph over the creatures, allowing themselves a few moments to rest before they continue
  • Naraaku’s eyes fell on the body of Erathis, plump and weighed down by obvious wealth. Promptly he searches him to find indeed a fair amount of coin (presumably extorted from the locals) and a note that was some kind of list. It seemed to indicate four items and four named individuals.
  • Thinking nothing more of it for now they continued on their way. The fight with the cilopses had been a long and tiring one and they also sought a safe place to rest
  • scouting out more of the abandoned buildings as they made their way closer to the Vordon compound the air became quieter and colder. Solzak and naraaku decided that they would scout ahead and report back the general layout of the complex so that they all could decide how to proceed, after all the group was too large now to just try to sneak in unnoticed
  • Despite being not long after midday the sky blackened and already it looked as if there was little hours left of the day
  • walking silently through the ruins solzak and naraaku came upon an abandoned building that was high enough to give a view of the compound. Carefully they scale the shaky structure and although the air is thick with a darkening haze their keen eyesight soon adjusts to the gloom and they are able to see the structure in its entirety.
  • What was once a mercantile compound was now nothing more than a huge graveyard, warped by the presence of a necrotic sorceress and years of defiling magic. The area within the walls was filled with ancient tombs, some quite ornately carved and in between cracked stone and sandy paths sat overgrown brambles and cacti. The centre was dominated by a sickly pool of stagnant water, bubbling and steaming away as if from a defiled hot spring. Twisted palms surrounded it and dipped their blackened leaves to drink from its taint. A building at the rear of the compound looked like it was now a mausoleum, lit by four torches, the only lights visible in the area. The door to this building looked as if it were carved from the backbone of some great beast
  • They decided to carefully walk around the outer wall in order to establish any possible weak spot or other form of entry. They walked past the entrance, carefully passing the twin towers and triple archway which seemed to be the only remnant of the ancient vordon compound. The symbol of the house on the tower the last remaining reminder of what this once was. The rest of the necropolis was far newer, the wall 20’ high and built entirely of bones and skeletal remains, sending a shudder through their spines
  • further round the compound on the north side the area was just wasteland with a few walls and outcrops remaining, in the distance the arena, palace and ziggurat stood proudly above the rest of the blackened ruins taunting them still like the cheers and laughter from the arena
  • the rear of the compound was much the same in terms of landscape but, aa they neared the southern most easterly tip of the wall the two could overhear a conversation
  • As the two approached closer they were able to distinguish the voices of some locals and the distinct tones of some dwarves. Moving closer still but remaining hidden they discovered that they were talking about Erathis and were growing impatient. It seems he was due to meet them there with some kind of components? Of course, the list retrieved from his body!
  • confidently but not entirely sure of the plan Solzak stepped forward.
  • The thugs were surprised and wary of the strangers but as Solzak divulged more of what they knew and that Erathis had sent them with the list they became more amenable
  • An offer was proposed that should solzak and naraaku collect the ingredients for them they would split laylon-ka’s treasure with them 60/40 due to being more of them and they having done more of the work (or so they said).
  • Solzak mentioned there was more of their group instead, and that they would be coming here soon to support them
  • The thugs looked at one another and struck a deal for 50/50 but when the group leave to get the components, some of the group must remain to help the digging team and as an ‘insurance’ in case of treachery
  • There was an additional constraint in that they only had 2 hours of daylight remaining, if night falls they would need to abandon the tunnel or pray that the undead that prowl in the ruins would not find them, and that is assuming Laylon-ka does not find them first. The final breach of the compound is expected to take about a half hour (mix compounds etc) so in fact the group had less than an hour and a half to collect the components and return to use them. Kalidnay is not a small city either, and although the thugs marked all the areas on their map of the shops/contacts, they were evenly spread, so perhaps the only way to complete the tasks they would all need to split up, an outcome unfavorable to all
  • naraaku and solzak looked at each other and both knew, this was going to be close…
