Session 51

  • Chattering of freed slaves, as they gather in under tyr in a large cavern just a little away from where they dropped down after their escape from the slave pens
  • Declamitus of the Veil cell Water Inix approaches Eben and asks where he proposes to go.
  • It is decided that those Slaves who wish to go free and be sheltered by nobles be taken by the two veil fire cells and most of Water Inix cell to the noble district where they will be taken care of by house Atrius. The rest will take the path to the warrens through the road of crypts guided by Forlan, the final member of the Water Inix cell.
  • Orsk manages to calm the slaves and stop them from attempting to steal from the tombs, one group stops only moments away from triggering a nearby trap!
  • Eben asks Naraaku if he has seen Solzak, Naraaku is surprised and replies he’s shocked solzak is still hanging around with them (no offence of course, in typical naraaku style)
  • Frost interrupts the moment of downtime to warn of voices and the sound of rushing sandalled feet above, guards! They must move immediately
  • Quickly the slaves are split into the two groups, the fire and water veil cells head east and the group and their guide head north
  • Naraaku scouts ahead, whilst Frost follows not too far behind with the Forlan and Eben and aided by Orsk’s psionic sixth sense for direction. The light quickly fades as they move further away from the well and the group are forced to hurriedly prepare light sources before they are pitched into total darkness
  • Walking for some minutes the road takes a sharp turn to the north and after 20-30 feet or so opens to a very wide street. The street is flanked on both sides by archways supporting a long balcony. At 10 foot intervals along the 100 foot corridor the balcony sports a decayed head of a furred creature with a terrifying fixed expression and wide crazed eyes. The heads once belonged to an ancient animal that somewhat resembled a Kirre (Athasian Lion/Ram) sometimes spotted in the scrub plains around Tyr and also occasionally used as a ‘special guest’ in Gladiator matches.
  • Naraaku approaches carefully and then frost stops him, something is disturbing about the heads and gives him cause for concern, although he can find no evidence of recent traffic. Eben is about to suggest they leave them alone when Frost sends out his fire hawk to smash against one of the heads! The fire hawk explodes on the head, scorching it and causing parts of the jaw to collapse, but then a huge cloud of grey dust bursts out of the head in all directions, eventually coming to settle on the ground as a fine grey powder that glistens and reflects Forlan’s spell of light. Frost turns to Forlan, who looks displeased. The brotherhood send a volley of crossbow bolts which impact on the head and cause it to explode in a huge burst of the grey dust that covers the floors and walls.
  • Naraaku, realising they cannot wait around begins to ascend the steps on the side to the balcony His eagle eyes immediately spot several loose slabs on the stairs. He swallows hard as he looks up at the huge stone blocks hanging precariously over-head, forcing him to quickly but ever so more carefully continue up to the balcony. From the top naraaku could make out that this area too has lain undisturbed for many a year and the balcony stretches all the way down to the end of the road. In places the ceiling had collapsed which gives the whole area a more condensed and cramped feeling. Searching again he is able to spot more pressure plates close to the heads and the ledge of the balcony. Carefully and quickly he hurries along the corridor marking them with the edge of his bow mindful to not get too close
  • Naraaku had gone on ahead without informing the others so it was up to frost to try to re-trace his steps up the stairwell, which he did but not before almost stepping on a pressure plate!
  • At that moment sounds of shouting and thumping feet were heard from down the corridor and Orsk let out the order to follow frost up to the balcony, it would be slow going but they had no way to go but onward
  • Frost directed the slaves as best as possible to avoid the pressure plates and Orsk ushered the slaves onward. Just then a sudden cold wind blasted round the corner and with it the most hideous sight they had ever seen, apparitions of all shapes, sizes and races came screaming round the corridor shrieking and howling as they flew past. The slaves shriek and scream in horror and even the bravest of them all, Orsk and Eben could not help but be slightly un-nerved.
  • Some of the slaves jostled one another on the balcony and then as they pushed past there was a moments pause before frost screamed No! A cloud of grey gas blew into the air covering a quarter of the slaves and some of the brotherhood. The panic increased as the powder settled and immediately began to harden and soak up the moisture from their bodies. * Those that could frantically brushed the powder from their skin and were safe but as they did others struggled and in mere moments what were once slaves and brave members of the brotherhood were now motionless statues decorating the balcony…
  • Naraaku reached the other side of the corridor and without hesitation pressed on hoping that there were no more horrific surprises up ahead.
  • The path split into three ways as it climbed steeply upwards to what once may have been a hill but the breaks and cracks in the stones suggested otherwise. Regardless, remembering the words of Forlan Naraaku took the left hand path up.
  • Proceeding carefully and checking his surroundings Naraaku then stopped, about mid-way up the street and crouching down on the floor noticed something vine-like snaking across his path. Taking out his widow’s knife he hacked at the vine and immediately and instinctively ducked as a huge scything blade came rushing out of the wall across the street and passed over him, just snipping a hair from the top of his head! Waiting for a moment he sheathed his knife and carefully continued wary of more traps
  • Reaching the crest of the small underground hill he could see the path stretch down before him and that at the bottom it opened up to a small square littered with sarcophagi. * He stepped forward and then instantly leapt back as he felt another pressure pad lower beneath his feet and a large section of street fell down into a large pit! A small ledge remained luckily however and with careful steps he would be able to get across, although it would surely slow down the rest.
  • Onwards to the small square he went hearing the shouts and panic of the rest of the group start to fade he began to feel his old instincts and curiosity arise. Of the many sarcophagi that rested here two seemed to be undisturbed and, as no-one was about he greedily began to prize open the lid, forgetting to check it first… A cloud of greenish liquid came spurting out from the sealed tomb as he moved it and frantically he scraped at the burning liquid with his hands. Luckily for him it failed to cover him significantly, and only served to scold him for his lack of caution. When he returned to the tomb however he was able to get a look inside and managed to pick up a few coins and a gem (which was quickly hidden beneath his cloak)
  • The slaves had quickened their pace to nearly a run after the traps were set off as Orsk, Eben and Frost tried to keep them calm. Frost hung on at the back ready for when the guards came around the corner ensuring that the slaves were safely passed him.
  • Timing was imperative and as the voices got closer frost closed his eyes and relied solely on his heightened senses
  • An explosion, a rumble and clattering of giant rocks as Frost set off the trap and sent the falling rocks down to the surprised guards who were caught completely by surprise. They shrieked as the giant rocks crushed and suffocated the first few around the corner and the rocks almost completely blocked the entrance. A wry smile on Frost’s lips cracked and without delay he turned and hurried to catch up with the others
  • Following the route naraaku took the slaves led by Eben, Orsk and Forlan came across the trap naraaku triggered and then the hole. Realising how much time this would take them to cross and angered at the loss of his brotherhood members Orsk took the giant hair rope, looped it around his body, took a few steps back and leapt! Remarkably he cleared the whole 30’ jump effortlessly landing with a smug smile at the other side. Quickly calling to the brotherhood half-giants to attach the rope to themselves and assist the slaves over the hold, there wasn’t much time
  • Naraaku made his way past the square and out onto earth and rock as the underground street returned to natural cavern. He slowed as he caught a smell in his nostrils that made his stomach wretch, rotten flesh! Drawing his bow he knocks an arrow ready to fire on any would-be ambusher
  • Eben remains behind with a couple of groups of armed slaves for a few moments, calling out to those beyond the rocks to stand down and join them and they would not be harmed. The only reply he gets is a retort to the question that it is he and the rest that will be harmed should they be captured
  • A blast on the other side of the rocks makes Eben question this tactic and they decide to head back to join the others
  • Naraaku now further into the natural cave catches sight of light reflecting on water, the beginnings of the underground lake. He pulls back tighter on the string of his Elven bow.
  • The slaves have almost made it across the pit as eben and the armed slaves begin to cross, when they get over Orsk smashes the ledge at the side of the pit to make it harder for those that follow.
  • Frost and Forlan lead the slaves down the winding street to the small square where they see the recently disturbed sarcophagi and frost picks up naraaku’s trail
  • In the natural cavern ahead frost spots some ‘Blackleaf’ a plant known for its healing properties. He and some others quickly gather a few bunches and then he bounds ahead to catch up with Naraaku
  • Naraaku makes his way to the water. He recalls that Forlan warned them that a family of Thrax are said to dwell there (water vampires) so he should be on his guard. The cave opens out to a much larger cavern where 2 sarcophagi rest by the waters edge, closed and with a trail nearby that looks as if they were dragged here. He also spots a glint of metal on the floor and in getting close spots a metal headed longspear! It is part buried in the stone and pebbles but naraaku effortlessly lifts it out. Examining it, he see’s it is finely crafted and of Halfling design.
  • The rest of the group arrive as Naraaku has already begun to wade into the water. Frost inspects the sarcophagi, finding that it is hollow inside and then takes up a position from where he can observe and warn of dangers.
  • The slaves, brotherhood, eben, orsk and catalina begin to cross the lake wary of a possible ambush and they keep a tight formation around the slaves
  • Frost suddenly notices dark shadows under the water close to the slaves. He shouts out a warning just as a creature leaps out of the water and tries to grab him!
  • The creature is a thrax and attempts to drain the moisture from the bodies of its victims. It lashes out at frost but fails to grab him and instead frost retaliates by grabbing the thrax!
  • Naraaku uses the new spear he found and is surprised that when he uses it the spear seems to grow as he thrusts and he is able to keep the Thraxes at greater distance as he hurriedly wades past
  • Orsk smashes down his hammer into the water as the creatures swim around trying to grab his legs. They connect several times and he howls in pain from the creatures sucking the very moisture from his skin!
  • Catalina screams as one tries to grab her too and she struggles to wrench the creature away before slicing it with her blade. It laughs in a sinister way as it drools at the live flesh stood in front of it, seemingly ignoring the wound
  • Naraaku turning to see the chaos that is behind him begins to fire into the water, hoping to connect with one of the creatures, but the surprise and concealment make the shot ever so much more difficult
  • Forlan fires off a couple of magic missiles at the thrax attacking Orsk and manages to distract the creature enough for him to slip out of its gra
  • The slaves desperately try to fight off the Thraxes as they thrash about the water and the Brotherhood Half-giants wade back to try to assist them lest they get delayed too long and the soldiers catch them.
  • Then, just as that thought runs through their minds, a sound can be heard of feet rushing through the cave towards them…
