Session 55

  • Facing the Crimson Shrine, the lights inside seem to illuminate the whole cavern
  • Approaching Orsk knocks on the door and it opens
  • They are greeted by knights wearing ancient metal armour that looks strikingly similar to that which they saw in the waking dream. The room is full of hundreds of candles, floating in mid air. In the great worship room at the back upon a raised Dais stands a giant metallic sculpture of the twin moons of Ral and Guthay in lunar eclipse position. Standing next to this is a creature that once resembled an Elemental priest but was now an abomination of the grey.
  • Jekall follows Orsk inside and begins to talk with priest. The priest is almost swayed but it works too well and the crazed priest says that Jekall shall join them. He beckons Jekall forward as Orsk follows with the others behind. One of the black knights then stands behind Jekall with sword raised high, ready to plunge through his neck and chest. Jekall tries to persuade him some more and then Eben, with whom the priest seems to warm to momentarily until he changes his mood and orders the other knights only not to kill Eben immediately.
  • Judging the negotiations as about to fail Orsk lashes out at the knight behind Jekall, however his hammer half passes through what once looked like solid metal as the knight turns round and its red eyes flare with anger
  • Eben too swipes at a nearby knight feeling like he barely connected as the priest screams ‘fools, how dare you defile this shrine’. Jekall and Eben still try to explain that they are friends of Tyr and enemies of Kalak but it seems that now what was once an honourable priest has become twisted and mad
  • Frost looks around and through the fields of candles that surround them he sees additional shapes as out of the corners of the room swooping black tattered robes fly in towards them, black obsidian knifes whipping from the cloaks. Frost lets out a warning as his fire hawk blasts into a nearby knight
  • Jekall smiles and points at another knight, and through his mastery of the way grabs him like the strings of a puppet directs him to fight its companions
  • The hidden wights attack, swooping in to make quick slashes with their crooked knives as they float and twist amongst the floating candles
  • The priest screams a battle cry and launches a psionic blast at Jekall who manages to avoid having his mind scrambled through sheer focus of will
  • Eben leaps up to the dais to attack the priest, cleaving a mighty arc with his axe only to find what should have been a mighty blow seemed to pass partially through the black metallic armour
  • As the battle rages on it becomes clear that it is far tougher than they had anticipated. Eben battles on with the priest as Orsk is left to fend off the knights, which he does well, but as the scratches and wounds build he begins to look fatigued.
  • Jekall stands back, manipulating the battle and ensuring that always one of the knights is confused and attacking another of his allies
  • Solzak, attempting to gain an advantage, maneuvers around toward the rear of the dais but is caught by a particularly strong blow by a knight, forcing him to scurry into the shadows
  • A shudder comes from the knights, as all those close to them feel the power of an unearthly and weakening force. The priest too, begins to emanate an aura of psychic power, making their battle even more difficult
  • Orsk beats back the knights as he is almost brought to his knees, but grim determination and great endurance see that he remains standing (at least for a little while longer)
  • The priest is knocked down by Eben who corners him next to the statue and continues to give blow after blow with his axe in a frenzy of rage. The priest bellows and knocks back the warriors, only for Eben to howl and charge back into the fray
  • Finally, Eben swings true and with a devastating blow the priest falls, the blackened spirit sent back to the grey and all that remains is his rusted armour and rotted cloak.
  • With that the knights halt their attack, momentarily at least, which allows Eben to talk to them.
  • The knights are hesitant to talk after fighting and even more so because they have not used their voices for centuries. They can barely remember who they are but reveal that below the shrine seems to be the resting place of the ‘creature’ they have seen and whose image is placed on the windows. The knights warn that only the pure of heart may continue, which spooks the group, realising their less than perfect backgrounds may come back to bite them. The group elect to fetch the veil in the hope Forlan or one of the mages will be able to get them through.
  • Outside Frost circles the shrine looking into the windows. He finds that the west stained window with the image of the creature is far newer than the image on the east which shows a lunar eclipse of Ral and Guthay. The back of the shrine however he sees hundreds of skeletal remains in a large hall beyond the main worship room where they fought the knights. Nothing else is clear however.
  • As they stand outside the shrine waiting Orsk has a slight realisation, that perhaps he, being of far purer heart than the rest of them, could have what it takes to proceed and pass whatever tests lay before them in the shrine…
